Heritage in the Nation’s Oldest City

ACI participated in the “Resilient Heritage in the Nation’s Oldest City” project for the City of St. Augustine. The project created an educational report and website focused on protecting the city’s historic structures and archaeological sites against flooding. Included in the report was a discussion on the prioritization of archaeological resources and a review of policy and codes which could incentivize the city’s resilience and help protect cultural resources. ACI provided input on all aspects of the project, which also included an economic analysis of past flood events and flood mitigation recommendations.

Our staff conducted numerous excavations and monitoring projects within downtown St. Augustine on private, state, and University of Florida-managed properties. Prior to the expansion of the public restroom on St. George Street, ACI conducted extensive excavation for the University of Florida, monitored several construction projects such as utility line installations and landscape reconstructions, and conducted excavation and monitoring for the awarding-winning Colonial Quarter project.
