Architectural History

Architectural History for Meaningful Preservation

Homes, barns, hangars, office buildings, roads, rocket launch pads, cemeteries, wells and gardens all can uncover how communities have evolved over time. ACI’s architectural historians examine aspects of the built environment to document their history, evaluate their integrity and significance, and provide the expertise needed to support preservation, planning, and permitting requirements.

How ACI Can Help

ACI’s architectural historians evaluate the built environment to understand how properties, structures, and landscapes have changed over time — and what makes them historically significant. Through field documentation, architectural analysis, historical research, and evaluation against National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria, our team provides the critical information needed to assist with planning, preservation and restoration, and federal and state permitting requirements

What Architectural History Services Include

Architectural history brings together field observation, historical research, and an understanding of how places have evolved. Through our experienced historians, we examine resources’ architecture, original purpose, alterations, ownership, and relationship to surrounding properties to help determine its historical significance and integrity. Explore our core architectural history capabilities to learn how ACI can fulfill your project’s needs.

Core Capabilities

Documentation & Research in the Field
ACI uses both historical research and field documentation to understand how a property — or group of properties — has changed over time. While examining historic resources, our architectural historians will photograph exteriors, take measurements as needed, describe and analyze architectural features, and conduct background research.
Familiarity With NRHP Criteria
Our staff evaluates structures and locations using criteria established by NRHP. If enough cultural resources are found that possess a significant concentration, linkage, or continuity united historically or aesthetically by plan or physical development, a group/area can be designated a historic district.
Knowledge of Permitting Requirements
Federal and state permitting processes often require a review of historic resources 50 years of age or older to determine if resources within the APE may be eligible for listing in the NRHP — and if they would be affected by the proposed project. ACI helps clients identify and evaluate resources, assess their potential National Register eligibility, and understand how proposed projects may impact them.

When to Contact ACI

Your Project's Progress May Involve an Architectural History Review

When a project involves a historic property, structure, or landscape, it’s important to determine whether an evaluation is needed to satisfy federal and state permitting requirements — and to preserve the past. If you have concerns regarding architectural history, the first step is starting a conversation with our team at ACI.

From the First Conversation to a Clear Path Forward

Every project begins with understanding the entire situation. ACI reviews your project location, timeline, available documentation such as photos or descriptions of what was found, known requirements, and any concerns regarding cultural resources to determine the most appropriate path forward.

Your Details Help Us Determine the Scope

Using the information you provided, our team determines whether additional research, field investigations, technical studies, or other services are appropriate. We then develop a clear plan and provide the documentation or recommendations needed to support your project.
