Historical Research

Experienced Historical Research for Cultural Resources

Impactful cultural resource management starts with a thorough understanding of the past. Our historians have conducted research of archaeological and historical sites, buildings, landscapes, and objects over decades. ACI’s historical research draws from publicly available records, specialized archives, and 50 years of project experience to provide the context needed for evaluation of a cultural resource’s NRHP significance.

How ACI Can Help

Our historians not only look at public records, but we have an archive of our own, built from decades of cultural resource projects. We collaborate alongside archaeologists, architectural historians, city planners, tribal members, and the public to gather information in the development of historic contexts — a critical piece in understanding cultural resources. The insights gained through ACI’s work supports project decisions today while preserving valuable historical context for future planning.

What Historical Research Includes

Our historical research provides the foundation for evaluating cultural resources and understanding their significance within broader historical context. The ACI team applies decades of experience, extensive archives, and established research methods to support documentation, National Register evaluations and preservation planning.

Core Capabilities

An Archive of Our Own, Dating Back 50 Years
Beyond publicly available records, ACI maintains an extensive internal archive built from decades of cultural resource projects across Florida and beyond. Our collection provides valuable historical insight into archaeological sites, historic resources, landscapes, and communities, allowing our historians to draw connections, identify patterns, and develop stronger historic contexts. Combined with our professional experience, ACI's archive helps support accurate evaluations, preservation efforts, and project decisions.
Collaboration Between Various Parties
Understanding the history and significance of cultural resources often requires multiple perspectives. ACI works alongside archaeologists, architectural historians, city planners, tribal representatives, agencies, and the public to gather information, develop meaningful historic contexts, and build a more complete understanding of the resources being evaluated.
Development of Historical Markers & Displays
Not only does history go into the reports we produce, but ACI has written numerous historical markers found along roadways and at significant archaeological and historic resources throughout Florida. Our team has also helped develop interpretive displays at Historic Spanish Point, traveling exhibits, and various museums.

When to Contact ACI

Historical Research May Be Necessary to Move Your Project Forward

Historical research can provide valuable insight when questions arise about the significance, history, or potential preservation associated with a property, structure, or landscape. Whether you are beginning a project, evaluating historic resources, preparing documentation, or searching for a better understanding of a site’s past, the first step is starting a conversation with our team at ACI.

From the First Conversation to a Clear Path Forward

Every project begins with understanding the entire situation. ACI reviews your project location, timeline, available documentation such as photos or descriptions of what was found, known requirements, and any concerns regarding cultural resources to determine the most appropriate path forward.

Your Details Help Us Determine the Scope

Using the information you provided, our team determines whether additional research, field investigations, technical studies, or other services are appropriate. We then develop a clear plan and provide the documentation or recommendations needed to support your project.
